CROWN THINNING PRUNING

What is crown thinning pruning?

Crown thinning is the selective removal of live branches to reduce crown density.

Why would your ISA Certified Arborist recommend crown thinning?

  • Thinning allows wind to pass through or into the pruned section of the crown, which can temporarily improve durability in a storm.

  • Increased sunlight to the ground.

  • Reduces mechanical stress on selected limbs from gravity, wind, ice, and snow.

  • Reduces mechanical stress on selected limbs with cracks, cavities, hollows, and on co-dominate, overextended or long branches.

Crown Thinning Done Wrong

Unfortunately, many people prune when it is not necessary, or they misapply or misunderstand thinning, and subscribe to the practice of only removing branches from the interior of the crown. This is often referred to as lions-tailing, over-lifting, over-thinning, stripping out the interior, or cleaning out. Little or nothing is removed from the ends of the limbs, and this is a mistake. The best crown thinning technique to start with is actually structural pruning.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS THINK

We were very sad to see our huge Maple go, but we couldn’t have asked for a better company to do the job. Everyone at Parshall was professional, courteous…and the guy who did the tree work knew exactly what he was doing. AA+++…highly recommend!

Cindy Franseen, Homeowner

The Parshall crew’s display was very professional, safe and acrobatic, as they climbed and fell a mature 80 ft. oak tree, some of which hung over our second-story roof. Also, they didn’t crush any of the rhododendrons beneath the tree, were very friendly, courteous, and did a great job cleaning up.

Steven Stinson, Homeowner

We recommend Parshall Tree Care Experts to all of our landscaping clients and work with them to maintain our own (beloved) huge, old maple trees. Fast, reliable, professional & knowledgeable. Your trees will thank you!
